Has your alias been rejected by the CNMC? Reasons and how to fix it

Written by Héctor F

If the CNMC has rejected the registration of one of your aliases, check the reason for rejection before submitting a new application.

Below you will find the most common reasons and what you should do in each case.

1. Deadline to approve expired

The application was submitted on behalf of the alias holder and remained pending authorization, but it was not approved within the 10-business-day deadline.

This does not mean there is anything wrong with the alias itself.

What you should do: submit a new application and make sure the alias holder or their representative authorizes it within the deadline.

2. Decision by the alias holder

The alias holder received the application and decided not to authorize it.

What you should do: confirm whether the rejection was intentional. If you still want to use the alias, you will need to submit a new application and authorize it.

3. Duplicate application

The CNMC has received more than one application for the same alias and alias holder.

What you should do: first check whether the alias is already registered or active. If a valid registration already exists, there is no need to register it again. If none of the applications were successfully registered, submit a new application.

4. Alias without a valid link

The CNMC was unable to verify a legitimate link between the alias and its holder.

The link may be supported, for example, by a trademark or trade name, the company name, an Internet domain, or another element demonstrating the right to use the alias.

What you should do: review the link you provided, use the option that best demonstrates the relationship between the alias and its holder, and submit the application again.

5. Generic alias

The alias is too generic and does not clearly identify a specific company or entity.

For example, names based only on concepts such as INFO, ALERT, OFFER, or similar terms may be rejected.

What you should do: use a more distinctive alias that is clearly related to your brand, trade name, or company.

6. Alias may cause confusion

The CNMC considers that the alias could be confused with another company, brand, or entity.

What you should do: use an alias that clearly identifies your organization and cannot be interpreted as belonging to a third party.

7. Matching alias

The alias matches another alias that is already registered by a different holder.

What you should do: use a different alias or, if you believe you have a stronger right to use it, you will need to provide evidence of this to the CNMC.
